Fish Stories
Joe Simonet with nice East Shore Winnebago Walleye.
I finally got out on Lake Winnebago on Sunday the 10th. It was a good day, in that I got a limit of nice eating size Walleyes. (15 to 18 inches). I also caught a lot of smaller ones, so there was non-stop action.
I expected it to be good as there was a petty good South wind. The Walleye will hit all day long on the reefs when its rough. I prefer to anchor or drift the reefs if I can. The South wind allowed me to drift long ways on a large reef on the West shore. I t was difficult because there were so many anchored boats and I had to start my motor and adjust my drift a lot.
I used a leech with a slip sinker on one pole and a jig and a night crawler with a trailer hook on another. I immediately got two nice ones on the jig on the first drift. After a few other drifts of catching small ones on the jig and nothing on the leech, I replaced the leech with a two hook crawler harness and a split shot. I use just enough split shot to get it to the bottom. My drifts started in 15 of water and went up to 7 with all the fish coming in the 7 to 10 range. On my last drift I got the three final fish, 2 on the jig and one on the crawler harness. In between I did get a number of small ones on the crawler harness. I seemed to be drifting faster with my Lund Fisherman than the other boats (some even had drift socks out) but it was way more productive than the slower drifters and anchored boats. I used a yellow jig and yellow and orange blades on the harness.

I got out this last Sunday and got 3 Walleye on the reefs. I could only get them anchored and casting night crawler harnesses and dragging it across the bottom. There was a stiff South East wind and I was surprised how clear the water was. I could see bottom. It was only 5 ft. but that's really clear for Winnebago.
