Question of the Month

One big question and assumption being made a lot lately is that 4 strokes troll much slower than 2 strokes. We've even heard of our competitor dealers telling potential buyers this.

Four strokes won't load up with excess gas and oil like conventional carbureted 2 strokes, which means they'll troll forever. However, they don't idle at any lower R.P.M. than the 2 strokes and the prop pitch is still large so they generally won't troll any slower. People that went from a 50 h.p. 2 stroke to a 50 4 stroke will argue that, but it's only because the carbureted 2 strokes would load up so fast and the R.P.M.'s would have to be bumped up to prevent this. There also have been some issues with some larger 4 strokes "making oil" when trolled for long periods of time because they basically never warm up and run too cold.

The facts are that 4 stokes are great trollers, but the newer direct injected 2 strokes ( Optimax) troll every bit as good. But if you're looking for ultra slow trolling speeds you still need a kicker.
