Question of the Month

A frequently asked question of customers and boat shoppers is what a “Direct Injected Two Stroke” is and what makes it different?

"Direct injected Engines" refer to Merc's Optimaxes, Evinrude's E-Tec, and Yamaha's HPDI. A normal 2 stroke, both carburated and fuel injected, has the fuel mixture enter the bottom of the engine and go through the crankcase and ports into the combustion chamber. The amount and timing of this mixture is determined by the pistons forcing it through ports. This is a very inefficient process as a lot of the fuel is forced out the exhaust not burnt. That's why we got poor gas mileage, lots of smoke, and fouled plugs.

The new "Direct Injected" motors have their fuel mixture injected directly into the cylinder head and that mixture, amount, and timing is computer controlled.

The result is a motor that burns as efficient as the four strokes, gets up to double the fuel economy of old two strokes, and doesn't smoke.
