Question of the Month

Here’s a question asked by many people with older boats looking to update their motors. “Do I need a short shaft or a long shaft motor?”

Most smaller, older boats would have a 15" or 16" transom and require a short shaft motor. A 20” transom would need a long shaft motor. Measure the height of the transom right in the center of the boat (where the motor would mount).

In the case of kickers it’s different. Measure the transom right where the kicker would get mounted. This will be different because most boat bottoms are V’d. Also some boat companies raise their transom beside the main motor.
